Strike Three and They’re Out

I am without a new computer!  After trying out three machines, I gave up! (For the time-being at least…if you know me, you know it probably won’t last long.  LOL)

I dumped some applications on my trusty, very old, souped up, bionic Dell Inspiron E1505 and it’s stopped whining about it’s memory.  My world is peaceful once again.

The Yog2 Pro 2 was unwieldy.  Darn, double darn!….I wanted to like it so much, but I was just tense all the time, struggling with teeny tiny tabs on the web browser,  my fingers missing the keys on the chicklet keyboard, and the touch screen not working with various programs.  I took it back to Best Buy and they were very gracious.

I took home a Lenovo Idea pad and after much tweaking, customizing, disabling of features and dealing with it dropping my WiFi connection repeatedly….I called it quits.  I took it back and decided to just lay low, let the dust settle and wait for the manufacturers and developers to get their sh**t together.

No one should have to go through all this to get comfortable with a new machine.  And it’s not just me…in my research to find solutions, I discovered that other consumers are having the same issues.  I won’t bore you with all the gory details here, but suffice it to say that “the boys” are going to have to get on the same page and play together nice before I jump into the game again.  If it’s this frustrating for me (the lover of almost all things techie), imagine what it’s like for the average person!

On the positive side, most people are not trying to do all the things I do on the computer, so if you absolutely must get a new machine, talk to me first and let me advice you about the best solution for your particular needs.  I do consultations and shopping trips and I can tweak and disable things to make the transition more comfortable for you.

It’s been a hectic three weeks, but I’ve learned a lot that I can share and that makes me a happy girl.  I took the hits so you don’t have to and it’s my greatest pleasure to be able to help.

    Received this via email from one of my tutoring clients who is an author and becoming a power user of Microsoft Word. She will laugh to see herself described this way. She doesn’t give herself enough credit sometimes.

    Question:
    “Dear Mardi, We went to Apple. We re-did the password and I saw a Mach-Air. I think I like it. They are suppose to teach you how to use it??? What do you think? Then we need you to come over after Easter and perhaps work with Jim on his I pad. Sorry you are having so much trouble with your computer. My prayers are with you.”

    Answer:
    Thanks! The troubles with the computers actually have been a benefit, because now I will be better able to help people adjust to new ones if they have to make a change. Better for me to research it, and save others the frustration because I’m used to it and find it all very interesting.

    Thanks for your questions. I don’t think you will be happy changing to an Apple computer. It will be a learning curve to adjust to the differences and I know you don’t have the extra time right now. Also, being in the middle of your book, is not a good time to tackle this. Microsoft Word for Apple is not the same as for PC and I have other clients who have regretted switching.

    If you want a thin, lightweight laptop, there are PC versions available. You can see them at Best Buy.

    Hi Mardi, thank you for the info. I am not crazy about the (Windows 8) system but then I do not do as much so I can live with it.
    Right now I do not have any predictable time whatsoever. I work on people’s last minute notice. So when ever that is. That’s how I stay pretty busy in the season. I do not even have a designated day off. I work when the clients need me.
    After the season I will have time to focus on computer stuff and learning new thing. So if you around I will need you. By June I should be getting ready.

    If you feel you are lazy, maybe you just aren’t that interested in it, and it’s OK not to be. However, maybe you just need me to show you some fun things you can do with it.
